Newer Antipsychotics Linked to Heart Risks
A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine reports that newer antipsychotics, such as quetiapine (Seroquel), may raise the risk of dying from sudden cardiac death. Although the study found that the risk is still relatively low - about three out of every 1,000 patients taking antipsychotic medications for one full year are expected to experience problems - it did find that the risk increases with higher doses of medication. Although FDA approvals vary by drug, the newer antipsychotics are used for a variety of psychological conditions, including schizophrenia, autism, and bipolar disorder. However, they are also prescribed "off-label" to treat dementia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and other mood disorders. This new safety information applies to anyone taking a newer antipsychotic, regardless of the reason for taking it.
