Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) increases risk for non-cancerous breast disease and stroke
Two recently published studies found a link between hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and increased risk of benign breast disease (i.e., breast disease that is not cancerous) and increased risk of stroke. A study that was recently published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found a link between use of estrogen for HRT and increased risk for benign breast disease (i.e., breast disease that is not cancerous). Benign breast disease makes breast tissue slightly denser and could be precursor to breast cancer. The new study highlights how important it is for women taking estrogen to speak with their physicians about benefits and risks related to continued treatment. A second study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, reported that HRT is associated with an increased risk of stroke. This study also provided some evidence that lower doses of HRT and a shorter time actually taking the drugs may decrease the risk of stroke. Weight gain associated with use of antipsychotics
An article recently published in the British Journal of Psychiatry highlights the importance of patients and caregivers understanding that antipsychotics such as aripiprazole (Abilify), olanzapine (Zyprexa), quetiapine (Seroquel), risperidone (Risperdal), and ziprasidone (Geodon) are associated with weight gain. Some medications, such as carbamazepine (Tegretol), that are sometimes used in combination with an antipsychotic medication can add to the weight gain.
